BRASS CITY CONNECTION
How We Made Our
It all started as an idea in 2012. The plan was to play a few songs at the 50th birthday party of our drummer Will's girlfriend. Will, John and Kevin had become good friends while hanging out at the local Franco-American Club. The started making plans about 7 months before the party.
So... we dusted off our old equipment, set it all up and tried to learn some songs. There were drums that had sat in a basement for 25 years, guitars that hadn't been amped up in over a decade. We had a guitar player on bass, and singer-guitarist twangin' away on a guitar with only five strings. It was pathetic to say the least.
Then we added Jim (Will’s brother) as our "musical director", playing keyboards & vocals. Now things were getting better: we could start and finish a song! After half-a-dozen practices with this setup, some more Franco-American Club friends came to help.
We added Jeff on bass, and Woody on lead vocals. Now Kevin could switch from bass to guitar, the instrument he was born to play. Ah... now things started falling in place! Our 3 songs quickly turned into 6, then 6 into 10,then 12 ...etc.. About this time we added current member Tomas on backing & lead vocals, and Lisa on also provided backing & lead vocals. Ziggy added some percussion. It was getting crowded down there, in John's basement. But it worked! At the time, it seemed hard to believe that with all those pieces, and with our limited experience, we were stacking up a serious list of really good songs.
Our deadline was quickly creeping up so we did a sort of dress rehearsal on John’s back deck. With a few friends over we "rocked out" that backyard! It was "game on" after that, all geared up to play at Maria’s Birthday party.
That night we played about 30 songs in 3 sets at the Waterbury Franco-American Club and called ourselves “The French Connection” . We had a blast! We now knew we couldn’t just kill off this band after the party, even though that's what we'd panned.
So here we are. We dropped the "French" from our name, and put in Brass City for Waterbury, our home town. We've gone through some personnel changes and setbacks along the way. But we're still a bunch of good friends who love to play!
